I just redid mine http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=312848

I got a new Posi($431), and replaced all the bearings. My gears were still good. A new case if needed is about $400. I did all my own work so no labor charges.

IceManZ06 has one for a good price, 1100. Exactly what you need with 3.42 gears. Check out the for sale C4 section.
Good luck,
Robert

that could be a simple as a bearing... jack the car up and turn the wheels to determine where the noise is.

unless you race, there is no reason for such a failure.

I used a new Gm Posi since I didn't want a used one. But you can pick up a used one from a Corvette salvage yard like http://www.contemporarycorvette.com/

Mine made the same noise and it was just the U-joints I had let go too long. Replaced them and all is well. Hope it is that simple for you.

Your 96 LT4 has a Dana 44 rear. They are strong rear ends. Unless you do hi RPM launches with slicks on frequently it is probably something simple.
