Default how do I check out starter

I would like some advice please.Went for drive yesterday, starter sounded tired when I started car after stop, it would spin and then bog down, but by then it would start. when I got home I started car about three times in a row. then it quit starting, turn key and got nothing. even after waiting for a while. Checked for codes, none there. this morning it started fine for about three or four times then nothing again. But I can hear click behind dash like some one said I should from vats system so do I need starter and anyway to check it, hate to change it and then have same trouble. thanks

First measure the battery volts when cranking. The battery should not fall below 9.0 volts or the battery is discharged or at the end of its service life.
Many auto parts places will test your starter, but if it is intermittent, it might test ok. Remove your cables from the battery and clean both the cable lugs and battery posts. Bright and tight are needed to supply 100+ amps to the starter motor. Remove the ground cable first and reconnect the ground cable last. Soap and water and a stiff bristled brush followed by steel wool and a dry rag is in order. Even if you did this recently, do it again.
