Hey all,
I am a newbie, and have owned my 93 40th anniversary for less than a year. Over the pass couple of weeks my digital display has been blinking all off and on or showing all the symbols at once. This usually occurs when going over hard bumps,(if it happens) or sometimes it doesn't happen at all. Can anyone point me in the right direction to fix this problem? Based on the way it happens I am thinking something is loose somewhere..... Any help will be appreciated.......
Re: digital display blinks on and off (corvettelover60)
The problem I'm familar with causes the dash to go completely blank and the high beam indicator (blue in color) light illuminates.
This problem has been traced to an intermittent ground problem and the fix is pretty simply. You solder a wire on the circuit board which provided a better ground.
Not sure if what you're experiencing is caused by the same ground problem though.
There is a website that has all the photos on how to solder in the ground wire and has more info on different problems the digital dash can experience.
I use to have the URL but lost it when I had to do a reinstall. Maybe someone can post it for you.
Re: digital display blinks on and off (corvettelover60)
I had that on my 92..i think it's the same thing..mine wenk blank, or flashed SYS at me. it would go blank totally, give me wild gibberish. it would do the gibbish on bumps and be more likely to go blank in hotter weather. my problem was that the gauge cluster wasn't making good contact with the plug behind it. there are 20 or so pins in the back of the cluster that go into the plug when you push it back in place. try pushing back the lower left part of the cluster, about where the RPM letters are. that might clear it up. i can give you the quick and dirty fix on that, or the long and slow one, i did both. my problem was that the plug that's attached to the car wasn't firmly attached, so when i pushed back on it, the plug would move further back also. the fixes are:
1) put 4 pennies in a mint wrapper from Abuelo's on I-20. wedge this inbetween the cluster bezel and the cluster on the lower left.
2) take the cluster bezel off and tighten the little bolts that hold the cluster on on the left side. this might take up some slack and make better contact.
3) remove the carpety and aluminum panels underneath the steering column. after you remove the aluminum one, you can reach behind the panel and push the plug forward to the cluster. this helped too. :yesnod: let me know if any of this was useful..
Re: digital display blinks on and off (corvettelover60)
Thanks for the feedback, I will have the battery checked tomorrow, but before going I will push in the cluster to see if that improves the problem and if those fail, I will take it to a independent corvette mechanic to see if he can fix the ground problem.......
Thrilly! you know.... I really hesitated before I admitted to doing that. I am fairly ashamed of myself. It helps that the wrapper is black.. it doesn't show up very well! I saw your post on your coat hanger attack. that's a bad deal. it reminded me of when i was a teenager, i ran over a 1/2 inch bolt and had to get my tire fixed. my dad gave me a big speech about not watching where i was driving. I mean- really... who can see stuff that size well enought to dodge it??? not me... :conehead
Brian, I think you need to start a thread or I will of most imaginitive fixes
The hanger thing... :cry It was dark and there are no street lights there so there would have been no possible way to see it anyway. What's with my luck when it comes to the tires??!!
