On the LT1 is TDC determined by the timing mark (yellow?) on the balancer being at 12 o'clock. I can't find a timing marker on the engine.

I just got done ripping mine apart. Correct there are no timing marks.

The balancer is not keyed, so there is no guarentee. But the up arrow should indicate TDC. It is just a rough estimate as you can't really tell if the arrow is truly straight up or the balancer was perfectly installed.

I thought I was pointing straight up, but when the timing chain cover came off I was a tooth off from the dots lining up. So if it is critical, go through the sparkplug hole to measure.

Thank you Jay, I put my finger over #1 cylinder's spark plug hole to determine TDC. I just wanted to know if there were any precise marks on the engine or balancer.

Good luck. If you want real accuracy I know that there is a special tool you can get that screws into the sparkplug hole that has an indicator. But an unsharpened pencil will do the trick as well.
