Okay. I know modern cars are rated SAE net at the flywheel. We then run dynos (RWHP) and convert back by normally using about 15% loss on a standard and 20% on an auto.
My question is this:
Does anyone have any idea what the % would be to get it near the gross hp rating they had in the 60's? Reason I'm asking is I'd like to give my Dad some idea what these cars are putting out that he can relate too. You tell him 300hp and he's like well they where 450hp this and 500hp that back in his day! Any help would be appreciated!
A 383 stroker putting 365 RWHP is not = to a '64 327, 365hp, mt. :nonod:
Well any ruff estimate will do. It doesn't have to be perfect. I know I've read articles that have taken the gross horsepower estimate and converted it to SAE net, I just don't know where they are right now! :(
Don't quote me on this... but on a TV show called "Shade Tree Mechanic" during the past winter, I think I remember a conversation that today's HP ratings were roughly 25% less than back in the sixties. This would mean that a '92 LT1 300hp rating would have been 375hp back in '65. I agree with a previous reply about over-ratings/under-ratings back then, but most were underated because of the insurance companies and safety hawks.
Hey, its not a bad thing to leave dad with his "illusions"!! :yesnod:
SAE net is approximately 80% of SAE gross. 405 hp SAE net (Z06) = 508 hp SAE gross. 450 hp SAE gross = 360 hp net (1966 427 with real hp rating). Chevrolet changed from gross to net in 71.
An LT1 on an engine dyno with no belts/dyno exhaust, pulls 386 HP at the flywheel according to this chevy book, that's gross rated, before the LS1 it was the most powerful stock chevy smallblock, period.
