Default 92 heater core

The heater core was bypassed on my 92 when I bought it, which I assume the reason is it went bad. Is there any other reason it might have been bypassed other than it being bad (just wishful thinking here)? Any way to test if its bad other than hooking it back up? I bought the car mainly for track/Autox but with gas nearing $4 I could certainly be happy with the xtra 10mpg over my SUV!

I would bet heavily on it being bypassed due to a leak. You can test this if you can put about 10psi of shop air into it and cap off the exit end with a plug or your thumb while someone else on the inside listens for the leak.

Heather core replacement is not for the faint of heart. Be very gentle with the plastic tabs on the dash and related panels if you go for the replacement. There are some writeups floating around in this or the general forum too.
