I am planning on going from 2.59's to 3.75's, what all is needed after the switch? Am I going to need to get my speedo recalibrated? All comments welcome.
Since you have a 93 you will need to get the new speedo gears that go on the tail shaft of the trans( i am assuming that the auto is the same as the 6spd,,) I got mine from doug rippe last year for around 100 bucks
A 3.75 is easier on your tranny than a set of 2.59's. The same amount of torque is transmitted to the trans by the engine but the car will "feel" lighter to the engine/trans with the 3.75's, so the trans works a lot less for the same acceleration.
Lower rearend gears (higher number) = less strain on tranny and more on pinion.
High Rearend gears (like 2.59) = more strain on tranny and less on pinion
Seeing you have a pre HPP adjustable tranny(just a tech term for a non 4L60E) you'll need a 3 series VSS(Vehicle Speed Sensor) and correct speedo gears. I'd highly recommend dealing with Jeff Kopp, aka 18carfan from Superior Chevrolet. He'll get you the right stuff and seeing you're a forum member, it'll be 10% above cost. Besides He's a super guy to deal with.
Tell Him JD sent ya.....Here's the e mail I use to contact him.
Actually not to start an argument, but Redvet is only half right. Yes it is better on the tranny, but not the rear. The D36 is weak to begin with, but with the 3.75 and having a small pinion, the pinion spins with enough torque to actually move the carrier backwards instead of turning it. This happens only when there is traction, and the reason it happens is becaues the housing is not beefy enough to keep it from happening. So when the ring gear moves away from the pinion it rips the teeth of the pinion and then everything else starts to grenade. I just saw a perfect example of this last week. The only thing you can do to prevent it is to buy a HD rear cover that has main cap blocks in it.
i think pcmforless can tune your computer/burn you a chip and give you a few more horses as well...
