I have a 96 C4 (P) 5.7L How much Engine Oil should I purchase, and what grade (I live in Central CA).
or
I was thinking of using Synthetic, but have read for an older engine (mine has done 88K) it's not good, as it's 'thinner' and could 'leak' out??
Thank you in advance for your assistance with this
Synthetic oil doesn't gum up like dyno oil. I use sythetic in my L98 and have for 10 years. It transfers heat better (remember oil not only lubricates but also transfers heat away from parts, aiding in the cooling process)
Your oil fill cap should say Mobil 1, SAE 5W-30. Use it unless you're really abusing that motor...that's what was in it when it left Bowling Green. 5 quarts, you can buy the jug @ Wal Mart and save a few bucks. I use an AC PF52 oil filter on both my C4s, no problems...just remember to fill the filter with oil before you install it.
88K miles, your engine is just now good and broke in...my '94 has over 151K, motor has never been torn down, and chirps the tires on a 1-2 shift when you're floorboardin' it.

I appreciate your input, thank you. Just looked at your Vette, NICE
Synthetic oil is not thinner and will not make you engine leak. What happens is when the conventional oil breaks down, or collects dirt, it becomes like sludge or tar. This sticks in the corners and gasket areas of the engine, and could potentially block a leak in the gasket from actually leaking. When you switch to synthetic the detergents and dispersents in it clean out the old sludge and debris from the conventional oil. If there was a leak there already and you clean the sludge from blocking it, there will be a leak, but synthetic oil will not cause any leaks.
