This has happened a couple of times, but is getting more frequent. When I first hit the key to start...Click. Again Click. Then it'll crank and start. Of course I would normally think bad battery but I don't think so. This morning, it did this again, but then the starter stayed on. I could turn the key off, engine would quit, but starter kept turning. Finally I got it to quit after turning the car off and on several times.
Bad starter? Bad switch? What are you gurus thinking?
Same thing happened to me. The starter solonoid is bad. I don't think you can replace just the solonoid. Email Jeff Kopp at Superior he can get you a new one for the cost of a reman. Replacement is easy two bolts and two connections. Takes longer to get the car up in the air than it does to change the starter.
Same thing here. It mostly due to the exhaust heat causing the failure.
After you replace the starter, buy a starter blanket/heat shield for protection. works great. Cost $30. Look in the Summit racing catalog.
A heat shield is a great idea. Just be sure that the heat shield does not crimp the little rubber tube that drains excess moisture from inside the starter.
The heat shield crimped the little rubber tube on mine and one day the thing would not start. I was removing the starter to have it checked out when I removed the heat shield a whole bunch of water came out. After that, it started fine.
Thanks guys. The one thing I forgot to mention is that it only does this on the initial start up for the day. After that, no problem. next morning, there it is again.
So...guess I'll do the new starter/heat shield thing. Thanks
If your willing to spend a few xtra dollars for a lighter and better starter, get one of the aftermarket high torque light weight starters. They are supposed to be good for 20K starts vs 5K stock ones. 20k will out last the motor (280k miles). The thing is 10 lbs lighter which is a lot easier to install to.
