Back-up lights work in neutral, not reverse?

Back-up lights work in neutral, not reverse?
Hello all, Just bought an 89 automatic. This is my second C4!
I have an issue with the back-up lights not working and then the other day I noticed that they came on when I went past neutral into drive... Is this a simple adjustment or something.
Another thing is it is very hard to shift into L-2, I haven't even tried to put it in L-1.

There is a switch on the passenger side of the shifter. It has multiple switch contacts in it and it does several things. I don't remember the details, but you loosen a couple of screws (front and back) and it can be adjusted.
Mine had a problem with the backup lights not coming on unless the shift lever was pushed forward while in the R position.
