I have a 1989 corvette and yesterday I was racing it with a friend on the street for fun and when I went to go full throttle I heard a loud clunk or 2 and I am not sure what it was it went away after doing it twice and while it did that the throttle was not kicking in hardly until it stopped making the clunking noise then it was fine. I tried it later on that day doing the same thing and it made the same noise and I am clueless on what it could be.
Do you have an automatic tranny? Maybe comming from there when it downshifts when you punch it? Loud clunks are no good!
I don't think so, it is when I am speeding up real fast and only does it within the first 5-10mph and not again after that and it does not do it at all on regular driving.
1. Sounds like U Joint maybe? check the ones in the back before the diff.
2. Alaskaman- come on now- how much time do you spend on this forum to pick on this guy? we all have these cars because we all get a little heavy in the foot or we would drive a Prius-
I would check your left front motor mount, the u joints, then check the shock mounts, then the C beam bolts, then the torque on the rear hubs, then after that, the muffler/pipe brackets.
If all that looks good, i would check the nut behind the wheel.
Was it a rolling start so that the A4 had to down-shift? If so try WOT from a standing start. Just a short test to see if the same symptom pops up.
If not I suspect the A4, if so check into the other things mentioned.
A4 is automatic transmission right (r400)? Also if I remember correctly then yes it was from a rolling start of about 5mph then i floored it. Is that somethign all corvettes with that transmission do or is it something that need fixed and how would I fix that?
So why would it downshift if it was from a 5mph rolling start it i floored it and would that cause the loud clunking noise? I'll try it from a dead stop gunning it later on today or tomorrow.
Thanks for all the help maybe this can cure my problem
