Default 1984 Instrument Cluster lighting issue.

We just bought a 1984 Corvette and this is our first vette so I'm a little in the dark on this issue literally. The problem is with my instrument cluster. When I turn the key to the "on" position, all the lights light up like they're supposed to. But then the backlighting just turns off (you can still see the LCD display barely but the backlighting is off. After a couple of seconds it will come back on and will go back out every now and then. However, when I start the car up, the lights go back out completely but the LCD display is still working. If I shine a flashlight into the photocell, the lights will brighten up but when I turn off the flashlight the lights will gradually dim until they are completely off. If I turn the headlights on they will light up fine. I know I have one bulb blown out on the top left of the tachometer and I plan on fixing that once I get some bulbs. Could that one blown out bulb be the culprit thats causing this, or do I have a bigger problem?

Sounds like you have the infamous "bad solder connection" problem on your cluster. It's a very well-known problem, with a very well-known solution. Go here:

Ok thanks. I'm a little scared about tearing into all that electronic stuff. I might just see if I can take it to an electronics shop (with those instructions) to see what they can do.
