Im hoping somebody can help. 93 C4 automatic. Both ABS and Service ASR lights are coming on a few times a day. ASR comes on when i come to a stop, feels like car is gonna die but doesn't. Then when i start driving again, car will not shift out of first gear!! I have to turn off car, then start again, then car will be fine.
Is the ASR problem somehow related to not shifting, or is it a crazy coinsidence??
I hope you get some help on this. Just a guess but I would think the two are different problems. I will check the FSM for you and see if there is possibly any connection.
5E2-10 ABS/ASR system (FSM) "The adjuster assembly contains 4 cams for control cable connections. The cables are attached with slug-type retainers. Either three or four cables are connected to the adjuster assembly, depending on the vehicle's transmission: Transmission Throttle Valve (TV); automatic transmission only." So apparently the ABS is connected to the transmission. Weather this effects the shifting or not I really don't know, hopefully some one who does know will chime in. The ABS system is pretty complicated, do you have a factory service manual? You will need one for sure if you are going to try and solve this on your own. Good luck.

I might be related. ASR needs to know road speed, it gets this from the ABS. Might get it from the Vehicle speed sensor on the trany. as well. Not 100% sure without looking at my FSM. Which if you don't have one, you should probably get one.
If the lights are going on and off, that says intermittent to me. Also, if the lights are on, codes are stored. You can access via the instrument cluster via fuel/trip buttons. Do a search or FSM to find instructions. I don't have them saved and don't feel like typing them out. Just being honest.
its an automatic, and i didnt get any codes via the paper clip way. I pilled the abs/asr fuse under the hood today. didnt have a problem with shifting after that. will this harm the car by not having the fuse in?
i had the same problem on my 92 but its a 6 speed. i got those lights because the wire to my right front wheel sensor was not making a good connection. because of the movement of the wire while steering it would be intermittant. move wires while having someone watch the gauges. go slow as it doesnt set lights quickly. i have a 95 buick that the wires looked fine but where corroded internally.
You just wont have ABS/ASR with the fuse out. Won't hurt the car.
The ABS/ASR should not affect the transmission from shifting out of 1st gear. The 4L60 in the 93's is NOT electronically controlled. It is all mechanical so it should shift.
If anything the ASR/ABS is possibly 1) Closing the throttle plates when it is not supposed to 2) Retarding engine timing, when it is not supposed to.
I could be applying the brakes as well.
You cannot pull codes just jumping PINS A&B and counting the flashes.
You have to ground PIN G on the Data Link Connector. Then turn key on CCM should automatically display DTC's in all modules. ASR/ABS is module 9.
