Default 1987 Corvette transmission help

Hey guys, this its my first post and im looking for some help. My Trans is acting up! I will be driving and it doesn't want to shift out of gear until very high rpms. The only way to get it to shift is by going faster and slowing down so it stays in a higher gear. I've only had the vette about a month and a half and don't know awhole lot about the car but i do know it has sat allot being built up. To me it seems like something is stuck. Where should i start and please don't say bring it to a Mechanic. Thanks in advance!

Check the fluid level, check the tv cable adjustment, check that the governor isn't gunked up.

The governor is inside the transmission. It's under a round dome-shaped cover on the left side toward the rear.

Make sure your TV cable is adjusted properly. It can kill the transmission if it's too loose.

To get the TV cable right.....

set it so that when you take off in OD the upshift into OD will come at 55 mph with a soft touch on the gas pedal. Its trial & error. Whenever you make a TV adjustment, cycle the throttle WFO one time (eng off) after moving the TV cable.

This trans has some fairly cool features that most folks do not understand or even aware of...
learn about the TCC.
TCC is torque converter clutch. This locks in the TC under some conditions so the auto trans feels like its a stick. If you drive city in 3rd gear, this sets the TCC to lock up not much past idle..1100-1400 rpm..somewhere in that range. It will stay locked in until you decellerate down to that same rpm OR the instant that you touch the brake. Thats helpful for engine braking and sport driving where there are lots of twist and turns...It also helps keep the mpg up by not allowing the engine to "free-wheel" unnecessarily.
3rd gear is the TCC operations gear,. you can also drive city in 4th or OD but that bypasses the TCC and gives you a standard auto trans feel.

New to The C4?
Congrats on your purchase ! do yourself a favor and get your FSM ordered now so its there when you need it. There is much to be learned from those books even if you do not do the wrenchin on the car. You still need to know what it does and why and what the shop is going to do and why...with the over abundence of wanna be's turning wrenches and the very FEW that know anything about a C4, you need to know all you can so you don;t get hosed when you take it in for some work.
Good luck ! enjoy your car !

Its trial & error. .

"While most GM publications used the term "adjust", when you actually followed their procedure, what you actually accomplished
was to "set" the system to its correct W.O.T. position which will in turn automatically "set" the correct starting position.
We are not aware of a single GM publication that advocates "adjusting" the TV cable once it has been properly "set".
There is the wide spread belief that the TV cable system can be "adjusted" to make the transmission "act" better.
As far as we know, this system was never designed nor intended to be a transmission behavior adjuster.
We further feel this is a very dangerous practice being performed by many "professional" transmission shops and mechanics."
