Default Different A/C question

Actually two questions. First, all the posts I have seen on converting from R-12 to R-134 are for 87 and earlier. I have an 88 and was wondering how much R-134 to put in.

The second is that as I am driving, occationally the system will go from A/C to heat for a few minutes. Is this normal for an 'electric' A/C as opposed to the manual system?

Third question (I lied at the start) is what type of blower speed should I be seeing from this system? I am used to manual systems where you have A/C and control the air-low with the ****. Then you have the MAX A/C and it seem as if it is trying to blow the hatch open. On this thing, the max setting of 10 seems like about 3/4 speed on manual control.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice offered.

Default Re: Different A/C question (aj1988)

"MAX A/C" is the same thing as "Recirculate". There isn't actually any
change in blower speed, but in "Recirculate" you hear the fan noise
twice, once drawing air, and once pushing it. In "Normal" mode, you
only hear the sound of air being pushed, since the air is being drawn
from outside. So the fan sounds a lot louder in recirculate, but really
hasn't changed speed.

The '95 has a separate button for regular A/C and recirculate
independent of fan speed. Maybe this is the same on the '88?

As far as the hot air goes, the electronic temp control is trying to
maintain a certain cabin temp, so if you're asking for a moderate
temperature (just a few degrees cooler than the outside), the
system may be overcooling, then using some heat to compensate.
Maybe you might want to clean the cabin temp sensor?

No answer on the R134 thing, sorry.

A typical C4 Vette system takes 36oz. (by weight) of R12. Use 80% of this if going to 134a. 80% of this is 28-29 oz.
