Re: OVERdrive pullies for the alternator? (TIMSPEED)
Sure they are made. I just recieved mine from Arizona Speed and Marine. Usually they are used when you have an underdrive crank pulley to keep the alternator spinning at "stock" speed.
Re: OVERdrive pullies for the alternator? (Bill's86Coupe)
Actually I don't know if it will help the output at all to OVER-spin the alternator because of the Voltage Regulator ciruit inside. If you think you are underdriving the alternator and a pulley would solve you problem Wrong! You need a new alternator.
Now if you have an underdrive crank pulley then the overdrive pulley is necessary.
Re: OVERdrive pullies for the alternator? (Kieran ***)
Ok...look at it this way: I'm idling the car at a light, AC on, voltage drops to 12.5-12.3-12.1-11.9-11.7...etc...etc... So, I kick the engine speed up to 700 RPM, voltage climbs right back up to 13.4-13.6
You want to tell me I have a bad alternator? After I changed it three times already? When simply increasing it's speed slightly brings everything back to normal?
Hmmmm...I guess I could bump the desired idle speed setting in the ECM to achieve the same, but I would really like the increased alternator speed alone.
Do you have performance pulleys on your car?? If you don't that possibly the new alternators you got had the wrong size pulley on them, otherwise you are unfortunately unlucky with the replacement alt's. I have March Power AMP Pulleys on my car which does the same thing you are talking about. I might just get a higher Amperage alternator to make sure everything is good as it should be (If I don't sell the car first in the 4Sale section.)
Re: OVERdrive pullies for the alternator? (MrNuke)
I run the March two pulley set on the 84 CF i.e. smaller diameter crank pulley and smaller diameter alternator pulley. The amps read 14.1 to 14.5 at 600 rpm idle speed. The alternator is a stock GM.

Try turning on the A/C and putting it in drive and holding the brakes...then tell me what it reads. I see it as simply spinning the alternator faster when the car is at 600rpm and it'll solve it. The regulator will take care of the rest.
Re: OVERdrive pullies for the alternator? (TIMSPEED)
The site I gave you yesterday http://www.alternatorparts.com will sell you a smaller pulley for $10.95 to $14.95. You can also get one at an alternator shop - check your yellow pages - which is where I picked up one for 5 bucks. I took my old one with me to make sure the new one was smaller. It didn't change anything. By the way, it helps if you have an impact wrench if you're going to swap it out.
Timspeed, I checked out the amps at lunch time with the car warmed up without air on in drive it read 14.2 with foot on the brake. With air on and blower motor full on it dropped to 14.1 amps. The diameter of the alternator pully is 2". To answer Gregs question with the two pulley system the belt size changed big time. Took several trips to the parts store to get the right sized belt. I think it ended up being 7 or 8 inches shorter than stock. Hope this helps
Re: OVERdrive pullies for the alternator? (Greg Johnson)
Kieran,
Did you buy just the alternator pulley? Did you have to get a different serpentine belt?
Greg
I bought the alt pulley and the crank pulley. I have not installed it yet, my motor on an stand right now while I wait for my cam and figure this SR thing out....
