My '85 700R4 leaks at the lower pump bolts, Can the newer style 87 and up bolts that have oring seals be used without changing the pump? The originals have a rubber coated washer. Thanks Steve

According the the microfiche all 700r4's from 84-93 used the same pump to case bolts washers and sealing rings.

Pump to case bolt ACDelco/GM #8654343 also includes a very thin washer.

Seal/o'ring for the bolts ACDelco/GM #12337996.

What you're seeing is the remnants of the o'ring which makes it appear the washer was coated with rubber.

There are 7 bolts and they are torqued to 18 ft. lbs. Yes you can change them by just unbolting them, clean the washers and install new o'rings.

Default Pump bolts

The washers seem to have rubber on both sides, I cut a couple off with sidecutters hoping I could just stretch a new oring over the bolt head without removing the trans. Also there is no groove in the head to hold the oring and it just squeezes out. The threads go all the way to the head and the bolts Pete K shows in his rebuild thread are smooth for a inch with the oring groove in the head. I guess I'll have to go to a dealer to get some unless a forum member has some laying around.
I got the same part number for the oring, but my parts CD shows bolt with washer for 84 to 86 no mention of the washer on 87-91. part number 8673596. I know they redesigned the pump in 87 to stop the input shaft bushing from walking and pushing out the seal by machining a shoulder into the pump, maybe the bolts changed too. Guess I'll pull the trans. and find out needs a good cleaning anyway.

Look at this pdf and scroll down to page 8.

http://www.hooorani.com/productpdf/221%204L65E@hat.pdf

They show 82-early 86 used a gasket/washer.
The GM part numbers are always changing but
they show it as 8626281 which does show up
on GM Parts Giant as a good part number.

So it appears they used a coated washer on the
early 700r4's and changed to a separate washer
and o'ring for late 86 and up.
