There is NO external linkage on a ZF. It is mounted directly to the rear of the transmission. Is this with or without the engine running?

1st Gear
A common problem is the slave cylinder going bad. Mine went bad and made it hard to get into second gear. See if your clutch fluid is low. Adding fluid (if it's low) would be a temporary fix. Also look for clutch fluid leaks under the car or against the firewall.

If it's a 6 speed as it was stated before check fluid level in the reservoir. When my trans started to get hard to shift the fix was adding a little fluid and it's been fine for the last year. If it's a auto well thats a different story altogether.

will not do 1st gear
It is an Automatic, when i put the shift lever in 1st it does not go all the way. I came off a red light and had in 1st gear and it shifted to 2nd on its own. 1st gear is there i just cant keep it from shifting to 2nd.

Yes it can. Jack the driver's side up, crawl under the car. On the driver's side of the pan you will see the shifter linkage. With the tranny in park, pull out the cotter pin holding the cable to the shifter arm. Sometimes if the cable has stretched, the cable won't go back on the shifter arm perfectly without pushing the cable back in the sheath. The cable should want to seat itself exactly on the post on the shift lever. You might find it is off 1 or 2 mm. If so, loosen the 15 or 17mm nut and slide the post on the lever until the cable slides on perfectly. One picture is worth a thousand words and I don't have one. Good luck.
