To all that have had dim displays on the speedo LCD, other than loose connections and bad grounds the dim display is because the LCD needs to be replaced.
I recently sent mine to Southern Electronics in Richmond Virginia who confirmed it was the LCD. After being quoted $175, I sent it UPS and the next day I received a message stating that the quote was wrong because the person quoting was new and didn't know the correct pricing however if it was only the LCD it would be $175, but if the cluster needed repair it would be an additional $285. I then received a call stating that the only problem was that the LCD needed to be replaced but the price was now $335.
It would be nice if we could find where to buy the LCD's and not get scammed. The scammers know where to get the LCD's, so why can't we find them??
I had it confirmed before I sent it to be replaced but no one around Houston had a replacement LCD. I also borrowed a cluster from a friend and it was as bright in my car as in his. Southern Electronics tested the cluster and did not find anything wrong with the cluster, only the LCD. I have spoken to several people who say the LCD fades from exposure to sunlight. Not as bad as the LCD's in the 84-89 but it seems the polorized film works better on those units.
