Default Replacing transmission output seal

I recently noticed trans fluid leaking from the rear of the transmission so I bought a new output seal. Reading the service manual, it says you need to remove the entire exhaust system, the driveline support beam, etc.! Is this really true? I'm planning on tackling this job either this or next weekend. When I searched the forum, I didn't find any mention of having to do this. I would greatly appreciate some instructions on this.

Thanks in advance. I'm relatively new to the forum and will likely be asking for more help in the future. The list of things to fix seems to grow every day now that I've taken my car out of hibernation after a few years of neglect. At last count: valve stem seals, EGR valve, A/C, seat restoration, sound system (Delco Bose on the fritz), power antenna, wheels and tires so that I can install C5 brakes, water pump, weatherstripping, carpeting, and on & on.

When I did my 92 that is the procedure. You have to drop the exhaust and remove the driveline. I used several jacks to lower the entire exhaust down to the ground as a unit... then slid it out of the way to the pass. side. There are 4 bolts on the c-beam. I removed the 2 on the pumpkin and the rear most on the trans. I just losened the last one on the box and slid the c-beam to the pass. side to get enough clearance to drop the driveline. from there you can pop out the seal on the tailshaft.. If you have it that far, you should relplace the u-joints on the driveline as you won't want to do this job again for a while. :yesnod:

I would also replace the bushing in the extended case. I replaced just the seal and it still leaked! A forum member suggested I take a look at the bushing and sure enough, I had play in the bushing around the the sliding yoke. With the new bushing it is now leak free. It's just 4 more bolts and the removal of the speedo sensor. I took it to a transmission shop and for $35 they pushed in a new bushing and seal and threw in a new speedo sensor o-ring and case to case seal. :D

ittlfly & 87SAM, thanks for the advice. Guess I'll get the car onto stands today and start the penetrating oil treatment on the bolts. Good idea on changing the bushing. I know I have a small leak around the speed sensor so I have to remove that anyway. While I'm down there, I'll start working on the power antenna, as well. It's been awhile and my wrench skills are rusty to say the least (good thing the weather here in Northern California isn't too hot). :)
