In witch gears can you hear the "gear whine"? I can hear it ALOT in first, a bit in second , and abit in third when going abow 4000rpm. 4,5,6 is silence..
I get the most gear whine in 1st, with some in 2nd.
Years ago, a (non car enthusiast) friend was riding in my '93 6spd &
indicated that she thought the car was poorly built because the
trans would whine in 1st & 2nd. Told her that it was because of the
way the gears were cut on early ZF transmissions -- got a blank stare
back. :)
I never really noticed a whine in 3rd. I'll try to pay more attention next time. Since the gears are all cut the same, I would thing that this is not a problem.
My '89 (first ZF) is loud in just about any gear minus Sixth, but 1st and second are definately the loudest.....I actually thought something was wrong with it when I was looking to buy it.
My exhaust covers up any whine the tranny ever made. I seem to remember it would whine in just any gear, but not real loud. Kinda sounded like a jet spinning down when you would come to a stop.
I have a 91... i only get a whine in 1st.... well... i never noticed any other gears, but 1st is by far the loudest if there is in any other gear.... Sounds kinda cool i think
sweeet... I can just add that before my tranny oil change, the sound whas about twice as loud! I swaped to redline MTL ( yes I know ). But the tranny is soooo much smoother with his oil. And no probleme so far...
On mine, first is real loud, second a bit less loud, third sounds like a jet spooling for takeoff, and fourth and above seem quiet or are drowned out by other noise.

Whenever somebody makes a comment about the gear whine (especially at low speeds in first gear) I just say "that's because it's a racing transmission, not a weeny silent transmission."
