Default Oil Filter Compairison Thread

The mission is to find the best filter at the best price by examining the internals for quality of construction and materials.
Then you can decide which brand is best for your wallet.

I've got the cutting tool and glad to donate the time to dismantle, document and store the components.

The can openings will be videoed to youtube and posted here. (until I cut myself...)
As well as the data\information on the components

Anyone can ship a new/unused filter to me for this comparison.
Please PM me for shipping address.

The baseline filter I'm thinking of is for the SBC L98 engine.
Lots of choices out there. Seems the choice between shortys and standard is to be determined.

Notes
Three different height filters 4", 3" & 2" All referenced as the fit for the 86.

The observed quality of components and construction is apparent.

Starts out slow, but then on page 2 this oil filter thread takes off....lots of filters cut up and reviewed.

Even though they are LSx filters, I would think the results would be brand vs engine specific.

You'll see for instance that the AC "UPF" series, K&N, and Mobil 1 filters are identical, including various internal part markings.

Exactly what this C4 thread will prove.
The reasoning behind recording the opening is to silence the disbelievers.
I will be measuring the total area of media coverage as well.

Ah Haaaaaaaaaa! At the 2:30 mark of the Mobil 1 vid the "accidental" drop of the filter media is when the switch to a different filter media took place. Clearly there is bias and deception taking place here

Looking at filters proves nothing! You must have a controlled test, with real oil flowing, add contaminants and measure oil flow, and amount filtered.

True that a flow test in a lab or test mule on a track and scientific conditions would be best but I think you go too far by saying looking at them proves nothing. There are many brands of filters and within those brands there are various grades. However, there are fewer manufacturers than brands. So looking at them without running a drop of oil through them can reveal things like "store brand X is the same filter on the inside as premium brand Y" etc.

In the thread I linked above it was found that the internal parts and thickness of filter canisters of the Delco UPF filter is identical to the Mobil 1 filter as well as the K&N filter....including the p/n and markings on the internal parts.

Kinda like saying a PT Cruiser is better than a Neon cause it costs more?
Care to ante up a K&N for the cause?

Thank you, no.
The object is to open only those that fit the L98.

Great idea and thanks for your time! It may be just a look-see test but we can see how its put together and check the media. I used to run cheap filters and change em every 3K or so. Just bought a Jeep YJ that sounded like it had a flat lifter. Changed the Fram out for a Wix and dumped a qt of ATF in and the ticking went away in about 20 minutes. I am done with cheap filters.

Keep it going, Coach! I'd like to see how they are constructed.
