Default How do I isolate this noise?

I have recently developed a high pitched squealing noise in the engine compartment of my '85. The noise sounds like it is coming from my A/C compressor. Here is what I know so far.

1. The noise is most annoying when the car is first started. After a few miles of driving, the noise disappears.

2. The A/C still blows cold and the clutch engages as it should, but the noise is louder when the A/C is engaged.

3. I took the belt off and spun the compressor pully by hand. It seems to move freely and I am not able to duplicate the noise.

The noise is not as loud on the drivers side as it is on the passenger side where the A/C compressor resides. But I got to reading something in the Haynes manual that got me to thinking maybe the water pump is to blame. The manual says the water pump will emit a high pitched squealing sound when the impeller shaft bearning wears out. When the A/C is on, could the extra load cause a bad water pump to squeal worse? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks,

Steve

Check your idler pulley on the serpentine belt tensioner. Mine makes alittle rumbling noise for just a few minutes after I start it up, then goes away. I feel it's time to replace the pulley.
Good luck,
