Default Question with installing expander rings on pistons?

I bought a set of piston rings from Sealed Power. Everything seems to be straight forward and easy except for the expander ring. On the ends of the expander ring, there is some plastic (I think) that is painted. One is painted peach and the other is painted blue. The instruction say ..Be sure both painted ends of expander are visible and properly butted and locked as indicated before using ring compressor. My question is am I suppose to remove these painted piece of plastic before installing (old one does not have), and what do they mean by locked and butted? Do I have to use plyers to bend the ends together or something??? This is for my 87 vette. Please help.

If you remove the paint/plastic it won't be visible after installation, will it? The "color" is just a visual aid to help you make sure the ends of the expander butt, and not overlap. As you install the rails, the ends of the expander will tend to try to overlap one another. This will not allow the rings to be compressed without damaging them. Leave the pliers in the tool box. This is a "hand" job. Good luck.
