On the n/c contacts, I'm not sure where they or the coil sockets are, that is new to me. When I step back and look at things, there is a short on the CTSY/CLK circuit. My dad and I just pulled and checked the starter interrupt relay. The two outside tabs have zero resistance between them. The two inside tabs have on 45 ohms resistance between them. With the relay out, there is still a solid short somewhere though, so I'm still searching...
With the relay out, did you check for voltage on the socket? If the socket is marked, it s/b B & C. If with the relay out, you short A & D you should be able to start the car, if the relay was being operated..
My father and I have dug much deeper into the car, as in the whole interior is out, so we can see all of the wires. I have a factory service manual on the way, but with poking and prodding we determined one big issue was the alternator, which I'm going to rebuild myself. I bought the car as a basket case, and we pulled a mouse nest out from the dash and other places, so we're gonna go through it all, clean the inside out nice, and slowly check components as it goes back in... I should've done more research and work on my own before starting this thread now that I look back, but I appreciate all of the input that I've recieved.
Hi here is a scan of the starter wire colors from my 85 shop manual.
Note the cold start injector unique to the 85. and the bonus alternator/generator diagram.

Reason: More info
gerardvg... I can't tell you how much I appreciate this... Due to the holidays I'm a bit away from a FSM but this is the gold I'd be looking for... we tested the alternator and it is fine. our short deals with the fusible links on the starter solenoid for sure. We've got just about every wire uncovered and are working on tracing them... Thank you so much for this!!!

You are welcome
The FSM is something you just cannot live without, the clear color coded diagrams for your particular year vette and all the fault finding info is priceless.
You will have hours of enjoyment reading thru your FSM when it arrives.
