Default Widest 315 tire

I see on my goodrich 285's that they are actually 10" road contact area and 11" wide.
What a waste. Im not spending $$ on anything like that.
Who has the highest contact area? Goodyear f1's?

GSD3

I think the old BFG TA/KD might have been nearly as wide, but since they're not made anymore it's a moot point.

What about a bfg drag radial 2.

I seemed to remember when I had these in 275/40r17 that the shoulder made the tire real wide

GSD3's are the dude in 275,285 or 315 but they are getting crazy expensive if you can find them.
I guess Goodyear is trying to stop making them ? I dont know.
What about Nitto 315's ?
I think the bfg drag 2's are wide also.

here's ya some 285 GSD3's....

He's concerned about the contact patch width versus total width. To decrease that you need to increase rim size, making a lower profile tire. Round versus square shoulder is something to consider as well. For traction, tread stickiness is of more concern than the minor difference in width. Total width would be more of a concern for a road course car where it can be used in cornering. For a street car it's an appearance issue I guess.

My 315 Nittos seem to have about 11" contact, maybe a shade more.
