K&N air filter installation?
I finally got a K&N tonight and was looking over on how to install it. I was going to do it but it got too dark so first thing in the morning it is going on. I know that it is probably the most basic thing to do on a car but I have learned over my 26 years of life that there are the right ways of doing things (The easy way) and the wrong way of doing things. I normally do things the wrong way so If anyone has any tips let me know. If there is something to watch out for let me know. I think the directions say 5 minutes to install but the way I do things nothing you never know. thanks :seeya
Here's how I do it:
1st you loosen the clamp on the rubber accordian air intake duct where it goes onto the air cleaner box, and pull the duct off the air cleaner gently. Then remove the whole air cleaner assembly by removing the two outside thumbscrews and removing the air pump supply hose. Be careful not to break the clamp on the air pump supply hose-- it's plastic on my '95. Take the entire air cleaner assembly to a work bench or other flat area (tail gate of a truck works too) for the filter swap and then remove the center thumbscrew to remove the metal air cleaner lid. It's fairly straight forward from thence on... just make sure the three or four (can't remember how many) tongues on the plastic air box base unit stay fully inserted through the slots in the metal air cleaner lid after you have it fitted together with the new filter in place-- I took a needle-nose pliers and put a slight indent in the lip of the metal slots to insure the tongues are in good contact, but not too much indent or else it's hard to get it together. Once fitted together and the tongues are inserted through the slots well enough to hold it down in back, insert the center thumbscrew and tighten it up so the lid doesn't move around and is held down firmly. Take it over to the engine and fit the air intake rubber accordian duct onto the air cleaner and make sure it goes all the way on... leave it loose-fit for now and then place the air cleaner on the radiator shroud but connect up the air pump supply hose 1st before securing the two outer thumbscrews. Once the air cleaner is secured onto the radiator shroud then tighten up the clamp on the rubber accordian air intake duct. One thing I do, just because I'm picky, is make sure the MAF sensor is parallel with the top of the throttle body before I tighten the rubber accordian air intake duct, if not I position the duct on the air cleaner until it is before I tighten up the clamp.
Also, you may need to get some of that 1/4" thick weather stripping like is sold at Lowes or Home Depot etc to put on the stock plastic air box so the K&N seals good. Just depends on how true and flat your air box has remained over the years. Mine had some dips on the mounting surface where the rubber seal on the filter goes onto, so I bought some weather stripping and messed around until I got a good seal and no air could bypass the filter around the sealdown area. Drawback is if I remove the filter I have to make sure the weather strip stays in palce and make sure the seal is good again when bolted back together.
Hope this helps, I am on my 2nd EverClear Purple Passion and have a slight buzz :D I know, a chick-drink, but it was there so... :yesnod:
