Default this is getting old

new fuel pump, filter, new alto, new batt, plugs,wires, opti,waterpump,brakes,rotors,shocks,tire s,egr valve. now it will start and run great for a min or an hour, then the security light and dash flash sys 3 times and the car will not start if you kill it. as long as it is running its fine, shut it off and you may sit ther 5 min or two hours who knows. it will start but it won't stay running. it also has a service asr light but no codes. it's about to drive me to drink. i really like this car but i'm beginning to wonder if it is worth all the trouble. any advice would be much appr. thanks robert

Robert ,

I think I would agree with vader..

Try pulling the connector off your MAF sensor and start the car.. it will trip a code but you may find the engine runs smooth again...

I had a n instance with my 87 and 89 where the car would run likepure doo-doo I unplugged the MAF sensor and in both cases that what the problm was... if you have a Pep Boys ner you they run about 240 bucks..

The only other thing I can think that could be giving you problems could be your ignition key, perhaps the sercurity sensoris not properly seeing your ignition key and its timing out afterthe 5 minutes.. . just a thought
Good luck

Could be the brains - possibly a bad PCM. The one in my 96 went out and exhibited strange symptoms. Lots of codes, poor performance, etc. Then it took 3 tries to get a good one in since they're all rebuilds now apparently. :mad

Thankfully it was all under GMPP at the time... :cheers:

I just went through a similar problem with my 96 vette , I started relacing all the same things as you.. here's a few tips first check your injector fuses located on the pass side dash (this was my culpret) next replace the Ignition control modual, located behind the coil about $60-80 bucks, if that does'nt do the trick i'd start looking for a bad ground wire...Hope this helps

you could take the fuel injection/computer stuff out of the car & put a new intake & carb on & you will never have to deal with the bs again! :D :p:

Looks like he owns a 92 ~ that equates to "No MAF". This is a speed density engine. It could be a number of things, including but not limited to:

* Faulty TPS
* Faulty IAC
* Faulty MAP
* Faulty Ignition Module
* Faulty Ground
* Plugged Fuel Filter
* Failing Fuel Pressure Regulator
* Failing Injectors
* VATS (thanks to the contribution by Ramrod) :D
* etc.

Give us some real specific information (the more detail the better) and we may be able to narrow it down.

Do you have the other key that came with the car. Sounds like it might be a vats problem.

That was my first thought too, especially with the No Restart condition until the car sat for a long period.

yes i have the ori keys, had them checked and came up a 9, the chevy place said they were fine. i bought the car in sep it drove fine for about 10,000 miles. it then flashed a service engine code. pull it it said the egr valve was bad. changed it and the switch that controlles it, ran fine. then about 3 weeks later the opti went out so i changed it and the waterpump, wires and plugs, car ran fine. then the alto went out changed it car ran finefor about 3 weeks, then the problem started. it acted like the start side was fine and the run side was dead like it was starving for fuel. changed the fuel filter and the fuel pump. car ran fine. went out to start it batt dead. changed batt car ran fine 2 days and batt dead again. took it back and replaced it samething. the alto started to squeel so replaced it, alto shows to be charging by the dash gauges and the spin test at auto zone. makes me believe there is a dead draw some where. it will flash security in the left corner of the dash and at the same time[ sys ] will flash on the dash next to the fuel reading, flash 3 times go off 10 15 min later do it again. if the securinty system is bad why would it start then die? i thought the security system would keep it from even starting. it fires up perfect then won't take any fuel and die. you can pump the pedal fast and it will stay running but very badly, as soon as you quit pumping the acc it dies. if it is running when these lights flash it will keep running, no miss good power everything runs fine till you kill it. then your stuck maybe 10 min maybe 2 hours? when it is running with no flashing codes it runs great starts fine no problems then wham all at once start die, start die, start die, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. i am one step from turning this in to a weenie roast. thanks for the help guys robert yes i checked the fuses and replaced most of them just to be sure, even got a air hose and some contack cleaner after the fuse box, fuses in place and checked with a simpson the all checked fine.

just a shot in the dark. you mentioned that you updated your fuel pump and filter. did you check your fuel pressure. maybe you have an intermittent failure of your fuel pressure regulator :confused:

you may want to hookup a fuel presuure gauge when the problem is occurring and check the pressure.

good luck and keep at it. it took me almost 3 weeks to debug my leaky injector problem, and the guys here at the forum are really good at helping, and giving you suggestions.

just one more thing, to eliminate the VATS from the equation, you can actually have someone burn you a chip that disables it.

update, droped the lower driver dash and put a vats bypass in. put it back to gether and car fired up perfect. drove about 10 miles good power smooth no problems. about a mile from the house service asr light came on, a moment later security and sys flashed 3 times and went off, service asr light stayed on. drove on home just fine but when i killed it same old problem. start die, start die, it has to be tied to the service asr system. how do you service asr? is there a way to drop it out of the loop?i would prefer to drive with out it anyway. with all the great minds here shurly someone has the magic bean. any ideas would be help full, thanks robert

here is the latest, traced the wiring down. cleaned the grounds, checked for cracks or any thing out of the oridanary nothing. car fired up ran fine for 10 min then service asr light and flashing again, will start but won't stay running. gm said the ebcm may be bad. pulled it and it checked fine. just some info gm wanted 1142.00 for a ebcm, the local parts house wanted 420.00. same part, same box and manufacturer whats up with gm? this car is not tripping any codes and the problem is intermittent. ok i'm done crying for today, one thing for sure this is turning in to bs real fast. robert
