What are the cloth cover type grilles on my 89 Vette dash board, next to the windshield, in the each corner...They look like speakers but when you feel the cloth you do not feel a speaker but 4 holes like for screws
Are these optional speaker positions...There is no sound coming out only out of each door speaker and the rears. This looks like a stock Bose system in my 89... Appreciate some input.
I think that you should hook speaker up in the dash. If you are going to run an amp then go get a good set of componects and put the tweeter in the 4x6 hole. But if you are going to run the speakers off of the head unit then buy a nice set of 4x6's. I have been suprised how the a well made 4x6's sounds. They have gotten alot better. We put a set of Aura 4x6's in my friend chevy truck and they are loud. The reason that you would want to do this is because a good set of components will not sound very good running off of a head unit. Component speakers are not very efficent, they need a good amount of power to be behind them for them to sound good. But when you have that power behind them they are AWSOME. The 4x6 plates /coax speaker is more effecent, they need lass power to run so when you have then running of of the head unit they sound good becuase they have enough power behind them.
The 4:" mids make the most sense of the ones mentioned. Also plate speakers are made with a round mid and tweet side by side. The problem with 4x6 is they are oval which distort the sound next to round ones. If you are going to add an amp, then seperates make sense. But I used to install the blaus for a living. They stink SQ compared to most speakers. We just used them for replacement 4x6s for people who didn't want to cut new holes, had no money, and their original speakers were fried. You don't need to fill every hole with a speaker people. More in sterio world is not always better.

That is definitely true. I did compete in a few local car audio competitions with my 'vette, and I have a few trophies to show for it. I recommend sticking with round speakers, as you will get better sound than the ovals. One of the best things I think that I did was mounting the tweets on the A-pillars. They are a little bright, but once you get everything tuned they sound great, even with the top off.
Just curious, I have a system in my car that sounds like crap right now. Actually it doesn't work at all, came with the car when I bought it. It has two Alpine 2/1 channel amps, model MRV-T501, one behind the drivers seat and one in the passenger storage compartment, a Sony Mobile ES head unit model # CDX-C760, two 12 inch Punch Subwoofers which are out of the car because one fell out of its mounting inside the box (?!), and some Polk mids/tweeters that sound like crap, mounted in the kick panels. I'd like to keep the amps and subwoofers and replace the speakers. I was looking to spend $800 or less for 4 new, good quality but not too $$$ speakers to be mounted in the kick panels and in the trunk. Do any of you have any ideas as to what I could do?
RMWICK1- those speaker locations were used on vettes that came without a bose system. My 89 has a non bose system & it has the factory 4x6 speakers mounted there. I have no speakers in my doors. Just thought you'd like to know. SCOTT

Re: dash speakers????? 1989 vette (RMWICK1)
If you received a Vette w/o a BOSE radio, The dash had speakers. For the Vettes with the BOSE system, The speakers where in the doors and rear only. Hope this will help you.

The graphic is cool but the stuff used in it is junk. The system you are mentioning I believe is for your '94. The amps are adequate for powering speakers. You would want seperates for the front. If you plan on adding another amp for the woofers, then seperates rear also. If you don't want the sub to save room, etc. then 6x9 rear. For the front, I would look at a set of Focal PolyKevlar, Boston Pro, MB QM, A/D/S 3 series seperates. You will want the 5 1/4 models or 6 1/2. Either will need some mounting help. Put the tweeters high on the doors, on the dash or the a pillars. Put the mids in the stock locations in sealed boxes. The 5 1/4 are easier to do than 6 1/2s.
In the rear, get a second set of seperates or a set of high quality coax if you are adding a sub. Check out the top end coax speakers from the brands listed. If you aren't adding the sub, get a set of 6x9s. Not quite as clean as round speakers but more bass that you will want. I like the Bostons for 6x9s. Have yet to hear anyone beat them.
Thanks for the help, I need to do some more research before I buy a new system. Now I'm debating whether or not I should put the subs back in...hmmm...
