I've owned this corvette for about 5 years and it only has 40k miles on it. Need to change over the A/C unit to the proper freon. Any thoughts on easy this is to accomplish. Please note I am not a very mechanical guy but if it is not to difficult and I can save some bucks, I am willing.
From what I've learned about this R12-to-R134a conversion is this:
1. The oil that is used in an R12 system isnot compatible with R134a.
2. No amount of flushing will get all of the R12 oil out of the system, resulting in the destruction of the R134a, eventually.
3. A couple of things need to be replaced. I think they are the pressure switch and the Schraeder valve. There could be more than that.
My suggestions are:
A. Maintain your current stock system and continue to use R12.
B. Install a whole new, clean system and fill it with R134a and the proper oil.
C. Fill with another refrigerant that is compatible with your existing R12 oil.
