Default Engine swap!

Hello! I have an 84 vette. The motor is very low on horsepower as we all know. I am swapping out the the crossfire lump in favor for a built carbarated 350. the block is early 70s. So my questions to you guys who have been thru this is 1. what do i need to complete this swap other than time and beer for my crew??? 2 . did you remove the in tank fuel pump and keep the mechanical or vice versa???. Any other advice you guys can give me I really appriciate it!!!! Thank you

Off the top of my head:

I quick search shows the CrossFire FI to run at 9-13 PSI. I would use an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator to bring the pressure down to 4-5 PSI that a carb likes. You'll need to source a linkage for your transmission TV cable, 700R4 are VERY sensitive to cable adjustment.

Someone will chime in on doing a Carb swap thats been there.

Keep the in tank pump. Just use a block-off plate, and an after-market FP regulator. As far as DTC's that may arise I dont know. You may have to go old school, and replace all your gauges, (which probably wont break your heart) and eliminate the computer. h

Everything on the dash will work except for the mpg and range. You'll need a Hei vacuum distributor. Chuck the stock ecm. I used a console switch to activate the converter lockup. As mentioned an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator is needed. Look in catalogues for the bracket that you'll need for the throttle and tv cable.

Here is what I used on my 84 carb conversion ZZ4 Intake, 600 Edel. carb, Edel. carb corrector bracket #57301 to make your TV cable work your 700R4 work right, Mallory 4309 FPR, Edel. 8031 throttle cable/TV cable bracket(can also use one from any GM sbc that had a 4 barrel and 700R4), Accel 59107 HEI dist.(any non computer sbc/bbc dist. will work and you can use your stock 84 rotor, cap and coil too). You can use your stock throttle and TV cable. I used a Moroso 64925 throttle return spring bracket. For the TCC lock up I used a GM 8642473 (normally open) 4th gear pressure switch and grounded the black ground wire from the solenoid in the trans to the new 4th gear switch. With this mod you will only have TC lock up in 4th gear. I have a switch on the positive wire that goes to the trans. case connector, and this allows me to have the converter to lock up or not. Switch costs around $6. There are other kits you can get that basically do the same thing. I chose to run a new fuel pump circuit and bypassed the oil pressure switch but you can use the stock set up. My fuel pump now comes on when the ignition is turned on. I use a Ford inertia switch to shut the pump off in an accident. I eliminated my smog pump and AC compressor. If you just want to remove the smog pump then take it off and use a Goodyear 4060855 belt and you are done. If you remove the smog pump and AC compressor use a Dorman 34157 AC delete kit for a 88-92 Firebird or Camaro, about $30 from amazon and use a Goodyear 4060872. It bolts right up and I had to grind just a little where the pulley rubbed on the stock bracket. I may have forgot a few details but this should get you started. You will only lose your MPG readout, the other gauges work fine. You can email me or pm me if you have questions. Good luck. docwilcar@yahoo.com

If you use a TV cable from a 4bbl T700 carb car like a 1986 Camaro with an LG4 VIN "H" engine it will save
a lot of problems getting the TV adjustment right
You need a TV corrector bracket to suit whatever carb you are using

Rad fan will run from your existing fan switch in the head

Fuel pump relay requires rewiring from Ign switch or if you don't butcher the stock wiring the pump will run from
the stock oil pressure switch as soon as the engine is cranked over ( pump relay can be deleted )
and will turn off when the engine is stopped.

Lockup you either need a manual switch as mentioned or you can install a 4th gear switch in the trans that will automatically give lockup when you go into 4th

bless you all for helping me!! Do you guys think i should get a new transmission or is all this switch talk not complicated??? This is not a manifold swap. A whole different block is going in. I was going to use a 2500 stall converter. Is the transmission on the 84 run by the cpu??

They're talking about the torque converter (TC), they have a lock-up that can be controlled in several ways. I personally like the 4th gear lock-up Wilcar mentioned

"a GM 8642473 (normally open) 4th gear pressure switch and grounded the black ground wire from the solenoid in the trans to the new 4th gear switch. With this mod you will only have TC lock up in 4th gear."

Peace. h

well. tomorrow should be a big day. I have to unbolt the middle support and drop the trans. then seperate the trans from the motor and out comes the old lump. I just went over decoding some numbers and the replacement motor is a 1973 chevy 350. 4 bolt main. Truck block. Now to watch my atlanta falcons blow the nfc championship.
