It is a change in your diff gear.. For the auto's the standard was a 2.59 gear (at least in 92) and the performance axle had a 3.07 gear. And yes, the higher the diff gear, the better your acceleration, but you loose some top end, and some gas milage.
Yes you will lose some gas milage, but NOT top end.. in fact if that were true a 6 speed would have a higher top speed in 6th but it will go faster in 5th..
Same with an auto.. with 2.59 you will never get to the RED line.. however if you get the 3.07 I think you will actually get a higher top speed.. but as you say less gas milage..
If you base top speed on that theory a rear of 1.59 would have even a higher top speed,,, The only way a 2.59 geard car would have a higher top speed than a 3.07 is if the 2.59 car had a hellova lot more HP
