Has anyone here replaced a tranny on a 91-96 vette and what was your cost? I'm almost embarrassed to say this cost me almost 7k($6,800). My clutch was bad, flywheel had hot spots, so I had to replace it and the damage on the tranny was so bad they couldnt rebuild it, it was cheaper and easier to get a rebuilt tranny(they showed me the tranny and dual mass flywheel...it was in bad shape). The flywheel was $850, the clutch i forget, the tranny was about $4,300 and labor was $600. Even though it was not recommended I tried having the flywheel resurfaced to save money...almost $1,000 for a new one. It worked, but, I wasnt satisfied with the results and after talking to a mechanic buddy, he recommended that I replace it because the hot spots would cause the clutch to not "grab" as well, and the hot spots would glaze the clutch and act kinda like "ice" to the clutch. Anyone else have this done? What was your cost? mine is a ZF tranny out of a 96 LT4. I cannot believe it cost this much, I called about 20 places all with pretty much the same answers. I could buy a Hyundai for that almost! Please reply....
That bites! Im an A-4 cat myself, but it seems the popular Richmond 6-speed replacement setup would have saved you about a coupla thou. Did you consider going that route?
7 grand!!!!!!    I'm an auto man unfortunately... but I picked up a new built up auto for 1300 shipped to my door... but I'm putting it in of course...
Sounds about right to me. Maybe a little on the high side. A new tranny from the factory is about 10k. Remanufactured from gm is about 6500. An average tranny from a salvage yard is around 3500. Throw in some other goodies and labor and your right in the ballpark. What was wrong with it that they couldn't rebuild it? My tranny rebuild (including a new gear set) with a new clutch was about $4300. Usually you find these things out the hard way :cry
believe me i was not a happy camper. I had to replace the dual mass flywheel and the clutch also which made it a little more expensive. The tranny itself was around $4.3k, it would have cost more for parts, so it was cheaper just to get a rebuilt one. Yes, I will not beat on my car for a looooooong time after that little mechanical replacement....hehehe
yeah KDR, I had bad bearings and about everything in the tranny was shot.....they were going to rebuild it at first until they found out the parts that needed to be replaced equalled pretty much a newly rebuilt one with a warranty, so we decided to go that way. I tried to have the flywheel resurfaced (because a new one is almost 1k) but it didnt work and my mechanic friend recommended also (also GM) that I get a new one. GM says to "not" resurface the dual mass flywheel, it must be replaced. The clutch was also bad..... they guy who owned this thing before me obviously couldnt drive.... :nonod:
