I've had the O'Reilly battery for the last 6 yrs...
actually I've had about 4 O'Reilly batteries that quit holding a good charge after 1 to 2 yrs so I get a new one. The battery may be marginal but the warranty sure is good !
This last one was an upgrade to the 7 yr full replacement...we'll see.
I had an optima red top that only lasted 1 yr before it started getting weak. Again, full warranty replacement.
I used Delcos for many years until they became impossible to find in my area. One leaked acid and ate up the inside of the battery cable. I had to get a ride home on the back of a flatbed (jump didn't work because of the bad battery cable).
I had two Optimas that died early sudden deaths. I got stranded both times. $65 tow truck jump the last time. Never again.
My 2003 Corvette has an Interstate that has been much better than the original Delco it replaced. The original Delco died suddenly and I had no choice but the Interstate. It turned out to be a good deal.
I have a Sears Platinum in my '86 now. They are made by Odyssey. The Odysseys are hard to find and the Sears Platinum is cheaper. They use the same chemistry as the Optimas, but have more plate area because of the geometry.
Sounds like a Sears DieHard or Interstate is the way to go and a battery tender makes good sense for the ocassional driver. Is this install something I can handle as a novice mechanic?
