My wife had the 87 Vette yesterday and when she stopped she saw smoke coming out from under the dash. What happened was there is a ground wire got hot and burnt the instillation right off. This is the wire that I am trying to trace. It comes out of the main harness to a two-pin connector that has only one black wire in and out. The connector is just to the left of the steering column. The wire runs down the top of the steering column to a lug that screws into a bracket near the end of the steering column by the brake switch. OK here is the problem. I removed the wire from the connector and everything seems to be working. Car runs fine Dash, Horn and Gauges all work. So the question is what does this ground go to and what could have caused this to happen. Any one have a clue?
I bet this is some thing you would want to take to the dealer. I would hate to read in a later post that you car caught fire. The fuse should have blown. Just my 2 cent.

Do your doorlocks, power seat(s), and windows still work with that wire disconnected?
The ground is G201 and it is the ground for your glove box light and cigarette lighter circuit. For that to burn out like that, it was probably getting a 12v source from somewhere. Good luck.
Since the lighter is on that circuit, I wonder if spilling a beverage on it would cause a short like this. Seems like it would happen a lot if that were the case.
