Scan tool
What is a good,basic scan tool that would work on obdi and obdii. I was told at a parts store that even the $200 obdii scanners would only show basic codes on my 92 vette, said I would still have to count flashes on the dashboard light. I told him I had a paperclip that would do that. Thanks ahead of time for any help.

I have an Actron CP9145 OBD I and II that I bought at amazon for $99. This model is no longer made and is superceded by CP9190 and is $245 at amazon and includes cables for just about every vehicle. It will give you live data too just as my CP 9145 has. There is a CP9145 listed on ebay and current bid is $39.

AutoXray 6000 scanner will give you all the information you need..Good for OBD1 and OBD2 cars..I also have Datamaster program on my laptop , but the Autoxray works so well I seldom need to hook up the laptop....WW

If you just want to know what ECM, CCM, etc codes are being set, you can do this via your dash.

Or you can stop messing around and buy a real entry level pro scan tool.
I have a barely used OTC Nemisys that does ALL Domestic OBD1 80's-95. ALL Domestic and Asian ODBII 96-2007. I got it for $400 on Ebay.
On my 93 it does codes, live data, Freeze frame, record,playback, etc...
for ALL modules that support it. ECM, CCM, ABS/ASR, Airbag, etc....
The ECM data is the best. Have a misfire? Look at the low res. signal and high res. signal from Opti-Spark, if all is good. Probably not the Opti-Spark. Cannot do that with a code reader or flashing codes.
It will meet all your needs unless you need bi-directional control and programming type functions for flash-able modules such as the C4 LT1 94-96 ECM.

I just ordered a innova 3140, $200 at walmart. Does obdi and ii,with live data and can. Guess I will see how good a tool it is. It will take a week to get here so I will post later how well it works. Thanks for everyones input.
