Default 6 speed shift **** removal ?

Trying to remove shift ****. HOW the heck do you remove the silver wedge from the shifter **** after the plastic shift pattern cap is removed? I grabbed it with a small vise-grip and can't get it to budge at all. What gives?

I used a screw driver to create a little bit of leaverage to try and move the wedge up from the front (litle lip facing towards the rear of the car). Get a good grip from the sides of the wedge with a pair of chanel locks or even your vice grips and pull straight up. If it's a coupe, you might have to remove the targa in order to get in there and pull straight up on it. It's a PITA but will come out.

Default vice grips and a small hammer

I second the previous posters comments regarding vice grips. That is what i used. Lock onto it real well, and if you can take a small hammer and tap upwards on the vice grips, it should shake loose. That along with a gentle rocking back and forth sideways should do the trick. Once the key is out, the **** unscrews in a counterclockwise direction.

I used 2 paint can openers as rocker bars, one on each side of the wedge & it popped out.
