This is on the Ruby. I took all the screws out that I could see, which includes those along the bottom and up along the sill, the one where the hatch release button would be, two below the door handle and one behind the door handle. I tried sliding the door panel back and forward but it won't come out. BTW the piece were the window controls are is loose too but it won't come completely out either and I don't want to break it. It's stuck at the top above the mirror control.
I'm guessing this is the drivers side door since you mentioned mirror controls?
I have had the passenger side off, but not the drivers side. It sounds like you have all the right screws out. I had some pictures of the passenger side door pointing out all the screws, let me see if I can find it.
found it... check this link and see if there are any you missed. Again, this is the passenger side, and there might be a different screw, but this might help a little:
Jeff and Craig, THANKS! The one is BEHIND the lock slider?? Do you have to pull the slider off before you remove the panel? (Didn't have to do this on Ol Blue) Also one on the light? Thanks guys! Joel will be very proud of me if I can do this :D
BTW Craig, email me directions to your house from 820, I can't remember the exit (where it crosses 35) and also once I get into your neighborhood. Thanks :seeya
The lock slider will pull off directly towards you (away from the door). As for the light just pry it down from the top with a small screw driver or putty knife.
Ok, well I did get those screws out but I still can't the door panel off. Also, the light has two bulbs, one disconnects but the other seems hardwired in, so how do I get the panel competely off without breaking that light or cutting the wires?
BTW the purpose of this is to figure out what is scratching the glass. The panel was off far enough to see that it's NOT the felt on the outer trim. What else could it be?
hmmmmm.... I'm not sure how many other screws are in that door if you missed any. All my books are at home, if you don't have it off by then I can look and see what might be holding you up. I've never had my drivers door panel off, so I don't know what else might be there.
If you haven't posted about the door being apart by 5:00 I'll call you.
I can't remember for sure, but I think there may be one under the panel you say is stuck. If it's loose but just won't come off, lift up on the upper panel near the mirror. It presses on the door frame there and may just be stuck.
Did you get the 2 screws out of the door handle pull? I noticed that they were not circles in the picture above. once all the screws are out, if your pannel hasn't been off much, the wiring will be a little stiff...
first, pull out the window and mirror control, and you'll have to maneuver yourself to get a hand on the connectors...
then pull the plate behind the door handle. the light has a connector about 6-8 inches back from the light, and it can be pulled through the top of the plastic piece.
next you need to unscrew the lock switch from that plastic trim piece. there isn't a whole lot of slack on that lock wwitch wiring, so your small hands will be helpful.
after that... don't get too excited, there is a small white connector that comes from the rear hatch switch on the pannel. follow that wire until you see the connector(2-pin).
That should be it... installing it is fun too. but practice makes perfect!!! with practice it can be pulled in 5 minutes, but my first time I was cussing for probably an hour. good luck.

okay, because Gordon Killebrew had told me that most C4 scratches came from using bolts that were too long on the mirrors and they would scratch the glass!
There are guides inside, the glass must be loose enough that they are touching when it goes up and down, or the guides are loose or something. There's plenty of things inside the door that can come loose... if you get that door panel off, I'm sure you'll spot it right away!
Ok, here's an update. I got the door panel off except for the fact that I can't get the harnesses loose for the window and mirror controls off  I noticed there also bolts holding these in, should I take the bolts off or keep trying to get the harnesses loose? Oh, couldn't get the power locks one off either. All of this was MUCH easier on the 85  :yesnod:
BTW I tried balancing the door panel on my knees and peeking inside at the glass. The scratches begin about 1/4 to the right of the exterior trim pad and is about 1 1/2 inches wide. I didn't see anything that looked like it would scratch the glass at this point.
you don't need to unscrew the pw window or mirror harness. just get a thin screwdriver, then gently pull up on the clip. you will need to unscrwew the lock switch though...
Thanks I'll let my husband do that so he can be responsible if something breaks  As for the door lock switch, no prob, that whole bezel comes out and can be put through the hole where it sits!
If the outer seals were replaced maybe there is a metal shaving stuck on the seal causing the scratching..
I cannot think of anything else that would cause that problem that you are seeing. Also if the outer seals were replaced it could be that when they were installed the Pop rivets did not break the correct way and left a stub that could cause it too.
