Last weekend I got my vette out after a month and a half hiatus. 5 miles into my cruise after taking a turn and accelerating moderately the tranny shifted into OD was holding speed and all of a sudden it revved up like it was in neutral. The car no longer has 3rd or 4th gear. Reverse, 1 and 2 are OK but as soon as it tries to automatically shift or I manually shift into third it just revvs. Has anyone had this problem? I doubt it is a clutch pack problem due to the suddeness, could it be a valve body problem with a a valve sticking???? If you had the problem what did you do to correct it?
Thanks
If the fluid/filter haven't been changed recently you might start there. Get it fully flushed incl the converter and change the filter. Hope its not too serious. Good luck.
Had that exact problem with my '87 vette after flooring one day to pass a car on the road, just kept revving and wouldn't shift into 3rd or OD. I could drive the car as long as it didn't shift (manually put it on second gear). Sorry to say, but you most likely lost your internal clutches. I don't know the proper terminology for it, but whenever you do the rebuild, be sure to ask for the update 3-4 clutch pack and try to get a shift kit on it. With firmer shifts, the tranny lasts longer due to less "riding" of the clutches.
Unless you're a 700R4 guru, You're looking at a rebuild, I've taken one apart and realized it wasn't worth my time, effort, and money to buy the tools and parts neccessary for rebuilding a tranny.
Well, a few weeks prior, I noticed that the 2-3 and 3-4 shifting was a bit smoother than normal, nothing real unusual, then out of the blue... GONE!...
I asked the guy that rebuilt it about it's condition. He told me it was pretty bad, clutches were worn badly, I had a planetary gear that wasn't good, and some other things. With hardparts and all, I paid less than 800! And that included a shift kit and all the updated parts and higher quality friction material as well as a rebuilt torque converter!
I have had the same problem also. It turns out to be the 3-4 packs are bad. I am on my thrid trans in 5 years. Have it rebuilt or buy a new one from Chevey for around $1,200. With 3 year warranty.
