Default Head Porting, help please

I am going to port heads for the first time, on some junk ones that I am getting. I was just wondering some techniques used in determining how to port them, meaning where to and how far. What are some good tools to use?

Get the Standard Abrasives video tape from Summit Racing, about $15; and a copy of May, 2002 Chevy High Performance for a good article on hand porting. The author used an electrical rotary tool from Sears with a carbide cutter bit and the Standard Abrasives delux kit.

i 2nd the above statement. basic porting can be done quite easily by the shade tree mechanic. more advanced things like shape change and excessive removal of material are much better suited to being done close to a flow bench. it's really the only way to test & see if you gain cfm from material removal. i'm in the process of building a 357ci L98 for my 1990 & have cleaned up the edelbrock base & port matched it, removed casting flash & removed lips in the casting to give it a better line of sight. same goes for the SLP runners...by the way guys...the reason these cost $269 new is they aren't finished at ALL !! this is one set of runners i would not bolt on any engine without porting and clean up. starting to wonder why i didn't buy AS&M, oh well by the time i'm done porting them they will be comparable. i have the latest GM head casting, or in other words the zz4 part # heads, i think i'm going to clean up the bowls, polish the exhaust & sand the intake runner. if i get really neat i'll buy some necked manely valves but i'm not sure if i will gain any hp with the long tpi runners. anyone have any idea where TPI gets limited? i'm guessing 375hp and around 430ft/lb will come out of this engine if i get it dialed correctly.
