89 Convertible w/6sp. 100,000 miles on L98 motor. Motor is stock except thermostat is either sticking wide open or has been removed by previous owner. Car runs excellect when cool (under 175 degrees, but after reaching 185 or higher she usually idles down to zero. She doesn't even try to idle, she-just-flat-dies. Will re-start. Engine runs fine above 800 rpm. Has no other obvious symtoms. I have pulled the codes and have seen 13, and 44. O2 sensor is recent. 6 BTDC timing is right on. Cats and muffler may be original. I just purchased a new fuel filter, will install it next. Anyone else have this problem?
Re: Will not idle when at operating temperature (ddsovy)
When I had a similar problem with my '87, back at around 110k miles it was one of the relays near the battery box which died. A few months after that I got code 32 after about 15 minutes of driving. That ended up being the EGR valve (under the plenum). No problems since. ~Juliet
Re: Will not idle when at operating temperature (ddsovy)
Check Idle Air control Valve, sometimes that can be "buggy". Also, have you scanned the car to see if it's dying when it goes into closed loop?
I had an '85 which would do this intermittently and it was the Idle Air control motor. Usually doesn't throw any codes so it's really hard to diagnose.
If you're having problems only when the car is in closed loop, you may want to check the MAF. Try disconnecting it and keeping the car on to see what it does.
Re: Will not idle when at operating temperature (ddsovy)
I had a similar problem with my 93. I had changed the inline fuel filter and the car stopped stalling on me, it helped but was not the real problem. The problem really corrected after I changed the "sock" filter on the end of the fuel pump in the gas tank. Easy fix, easier then the inline.
