This should really be done by a shop so they can evacuate the freon from the system..Even if there is no freon in the system it should still be cleaned out because of contaminants in the lines.. The mechanical part of replacing the a/c compressor is easy, its the other parts that need someone that knows what there doing.....WW
The only trick on an 87 is, there is a torx bolt hiding behind the AC clutch. If you spin the clutch you will find a notch that lets you get to that torx bolt.

Whoever came up with that bolt should have been forced to work on C4 A/C stuff for 5 years.
I agree that if the system still has the R-12 refrigerant in it, get the car to a shop and have them evacuate it. Once that is done, the replacement is pretty much straightforward. When you remove the hose fitting from the rear of the compressor, close the openings. Something like a ZipLok bag and tape will work fine but it should be done as soon as you open the system.
Once the new compressor is installed, get a shop to recharge the system. It might be a good idea to have the system properly changed over to R134a at that time. You won't notice any real difference in cooling inside the car and that refrigerant is cheaper. R12 may be hard to find.
Duracool. I've been using it for 15 years now. I know how to work on A/C but the compressor is gone. Thx for the tip on the torx bolt all. I can evac the system to air
