I have a 1988 4+3..mostly oringinal...the brake booster is hissing at the pedal. I am wondering what type of a replacement I should get.the ac delco one is 450.00 dollars. I do not want to spend that much. Can anyone suggest a good after market one. I have no problem putting it in, just need your advice as to which one I should get. thanks mike
I just completed changing my unit out on my 89, I went to Auto Zone and found a remanufactured one for $110.00 and an $18.00 core. The unit was not the black plastic one that came off but a metal one that did the trick. It also looks alot better than the old one. Everything matched up perfectly.
If you aren't in a hurry you can fix that booster. Usually the diaphram has a hole worn in the edge. I put a new one in my 87 years ago. I've since looked for where I got it from with no luck. Somewhere you can find restoration brake parts. It wasn't $30 total. Nothing to changing it.
You have to take the booster out one way or the other.

Many years ago I bought just the diaphragm from the dealer for $70. They are no longer available so you have to buy the whole booster. I recently put an AC Delco in my car.
Suggest comping the brake rod length new to old booster. One of the Cardone boosters I purchased had a rod that was 3/8 inch shorter. Did not check it before install, the brake pedal was a full inch (guess) lower than before. Exchanged that booster as defective.
Cardone Booster quality is questionable, first one lasted 6 months & was warrantied = free part replacement. #2 lasted 12-18 months = out of warranty, puchased another.
#3 in the car now, its on the way out. Will not hold vacuum for more than a few minutes after the engine is off.
If you count the exchange unit = #4.
I drop the column to remove the right side booster nut. Its a straigh shot with a 36"
extension.
