Default 4+3 overdrive notorious for leaking?

I just noticed some fresh spots on my garage floor beneath the overdrive fluid pan. I changed the fluid and put in a gasket a couple months ago. How do you fix the leak? It appears to be very minimal. As long as I change my fluid regularly, does it even matter?

Did you use the paper gasket or RTV? I use RTV and don't have any problems so far.

I used the gasket from MAD. This may sound stupid, but if RTV is used, will it prevent from being able to remove the O/D pan in the future? Isn't RTV permanent or whatever

It dries into a sort of rubber state. You will just have to pry it off. It is relatively easy. :)

Don't be surprised if it still leaks after 'doing it right'. :D

When I change the fluid I be sure to clean up both mating surfaces best I can then use RTV (and RTV only).

Never had a leak. Check to be sure the leak is coming from the fluid pan. It might be coming from another spot.

That's the important part. Get it clean and *dry*. Then apply your RTV, with or without a gasket. I like to use gaskets.

Just had the same problem. Pan gasket from MAD = leak! Changed to RTV and fixed problem. IHMO it is a cheap cardboard gasket, and needs to be improved. Pan should not leak with a good gasket installed.

It is generally accepted to NOT use the gasket. It will leak,... GM used RTV. The important part was already stated,..... Clean AND Dry. Any film of ATF will cause a future leak. Make sure you RTV around the bolt holes.
