I have a 1987 yellow vette paint code wa-8769. Went to our local NAPA today for paint expecting to pay about $150 for paint but was gonna cost about $500. Wondering where I can get a paint that matches closely for a reasonable price. I'm not looking for a great paint, just something reasonable that's gonna look decent when I'm done. Thanks.
Are you looking to paint the whole car? If you priced out materials for basecoat and a clearcoat set up, $500 is not much more than you will pay for a lesser brand. See if anyone in your area sells Valspar or Matrix. Both very good products and less $ than Napa. An excellent clear and hardener is Upol and I believe you can get it online if no one in your area.
Another option would be a singlestage urethane enamel. I actually think for solid colors they produce a better result. The only inexpensive one I have used was Valspar and it worked out great. Has excellent coverage, sands and buffs easy, and holds up very well.
Good luck and I hope this helps, Dave
Thanks for the responses! I'm planning on doing single stage paint. I emailed TCP global because they do not have a paint match listed for my year. I also emailed carpaintonline.com, anyone know anything about this company and what paint they sell? Also, how much paint will it take to cover the car? Hoping to do 3 coats and were hoping a gallon would cover but the last thing I want is to run out of paint.
I think a gallon would be plenty. I think you could get the paint you need online, and then take it somewhere and have it mixed to color match, but I am not sure. You certainly could get the primer and all of the other materials you would need. I painted mine BC/CC and did 3 coats of each with a gallon of each and had plenty left over. It would depend on the gun and the painter, as well as the type of paint. HVLP will get a lot more paint on the car. And even this would vary from gun to gun. I used urethane BC/CC.
