In the market for a C4, whats the story with the Lingenfelter engine? are they from the factory? What do they do to horsepower and milage? Thanks

John Lingenfelter (RIP) .......a shop in his name is in Decator, Indiana.

http://www.lingenfelter.com/about

Lingenfelter Performance Engines puts together aftermarket engine packages for High Performance cars. The Lingenfelter engines in the vettes were 383ci with the Super Ram intake.

Back in the day, they were hot stuff. Today, it's a pretty simple affair to put together a hotter set-up.

Lingenfelter still makes some extreme engines for Corvette. Vipers, 'stangs etc.

Give them a call, but they will check your credit before they talk to you....

I think the base packages start around 10K. They go up...and up and up. Depends on what you want of the engine. Its not a cheap upgrade.
The reworked Corvette sent to them was an additional 20K over sticker. When the base price was 33K, that was a bunch. Calloway was the only factory option offered for Corvette.

As far as HP goes, the question is this: How fast do you want to go and how much money do you have to spend? It only takes cubic dollars to go fast. When you ask for power, you lose mileage. So, if mileage is your sole concern, lower power. The faster you go, the more stuff you break. Beef your engine up and you break the trans. Fix the trans, your problem shifts to the rear end.

Bottom line is what YOU want. Do you want it Cheap? Reliable? Fast? Pick any two, you can't have all 3.

Lingenfelters is not going to be cheap but they are good and fast.

The reference to. you lose milage. is not so true.. you can gain MPG.. due to the fact. after retuning with some power add ons. Your engine / car will now effortlessly. Accelerate. Or maintain speed.. with very little throttle. now if your talking about WOT only. yes your MPG will diminish.

IN THEORY, yes. But lets face facts. Do you make all those mods just so you can cruise at speed limit on the highway? I know I don't. Every mod I made caused me to push it more and more. I lost even more mileage with the LPE engine because I pushed. So yes, in theory, you make the engine more efficient and you gain some mileage. In real life? Not a chance. At least for most of us.

LPE is first class and john was highly involved in the progressive engineering of the c4's throughout the 80's and 90's. he was instramental in the tuned port injection development while working with GM and evolving the tpi intake into a TQ monster, especially on one of thier stroker motors, peaking with the debut of the super ram intake. He then set his sights on forced induction, producing 1000 hp twin turbos and now using the modern S/C that fits the stock hood.

Lol relax. I built my setup and I use it. But lets face it unless you live on a track.. we are talking real world.. you can't go WOT everywhere. On a track WOT of course you will not be efficient and lose MPG on any setup

Every day when I had my 91 Firbird, I drove it. Every day there wasn't snow, when I got onto the ramp, if there was enough traction, I'd blast it to a buck and a quarter. I broke that rear end 3 times. You're right. I don't live on a track but everywhere I get the chance, I launch as hard as I think I can get away with. ALMOST as good as sex. It's like sex with the proverbial fat girl. Fun ride as long as nobody sees you.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I will look for a stock engine, which is plenty big enough for me.

I thought that my 91 Firebird with a 350 was big enough for me too. Hell, 245 HP was going to keep me happy. Now 410 RWHP isn't even enough.
