I'm cleaning up some 96 CE wheels, the painted spoke area is clear coated and cleans up nicely, but the inner rim area has black spots all over it. I initially thought the black spots were just dirt and could just scrub them off but they would not scrub off, and I'm wondering if its oxidation or pitting on the Aluminum. I tried a small area with some rubbing compound, still not great results but better, then tried some 1000 grit sand paper, this seems to remove them but here are my questions:
-Can I sand the inner rim with something more aggressive like 800 grit, then work backwards 1000/1500?
-Is the inner rim clear coated on the CE wheels (doesn't seem like it)?
-Will I remove the machined grooves by hand sanding?
- Would Aluminum Polish be better? (haven't tried this yet)
Any suggestions/recommendations appreciated.
I posted this over in Wheels/Tires but no responses as of yet.
