I have the Hurst Shifter and it is great!!! I never tried the B&M shifter, but in my opinion the Hurst is the best. I think most people on the forum would agree with me. :yesnod:
I just had the Hurst installed in my 95 and I am very happy with it. It is considerably better than the stock shifter. I have talked with people who have the B&M shifter and they are also happy with their set up. Both are quality products, either way I think you will see improvement. My recommendation is to let economics be the deciding factor. :chevy
Neither is the best. Only one works better for someone's driving style vs. another. I prefer performance and will sacrifice a lil extra noise so I went with the Ripper. The Hurst is for around town cruise, b/c itz butter smooth. The Ripper is for the track. Ripper has a shorter throw, etc. Just know there's extra noise with the Ripper and it requires more force to shift. Good Luck
PS I'd never go with anything other than my Ripper, hehehe
I would have to go with the Hurst.... simply because Chris has kept us updated totally throughout the inception and continues to provide detailed information on this shifter. If you are into nothing other than DRAG.... gowith the B&M.. Else..go with the Hurst!
I have a WRP kit but the 'in yer face' information and all the assistance Chris has given us warrants a hearty 'Aye'!
What helped me "feel" how a B&M felt was their booth/display trailer at the NHRA drags in Pomona. I walked right up and they had it set up on the display. It felt real good.
I ordered and installed the Hurst. It feels quite good also. The only thing that I have found thru real world testing(daily usage) is that it lets me go past 5th and I'll miss 5th. I have to "aim" accurately into 5th. Can't just push it into the upper right hand corner like before and find 5th gear.
I know ther is a fix for that somehow. I just gotta sit and figure it out.
Anybody else encounter this?
For what its worth, I have the Ripper installed in my 96... I haven't used the hurst but I am very happy with the feel of the ripper. You would need to try each shifter to make a choice.
so what your general consensus is, is that the hurst is smoother but more like stock and the B&M is shorter but makes more noise and is not as smooth??
Well...I wouldn't say not as smooth, but precise. It clicks when you shift into each gate. Just requires a lil more force but after a couple of days you won't even think about how hard it is to shift, instead you'll be thinking wooo shiznit that was short.
Canuck, Who is the Chris you refer to and where is all of this information. I have a Hurst sitting in a box right now so I'm interested in any information about it.
:)
chris is zr1chris (I think). He designed the piece.
I have heard things about the B&M that made me go with the Hurst... for starters, the B&M has a steeper angle on the shift rod which can cause problems with the acutation within the transmission, over time.
lets be honest here... the difference in throw is about .4"... that to me is not enough.
don't worry... chris will show up! everytime there is a thread about the Hurst, he is on top of it! haha!
Chris is a great guy, designed a great part.
I love mine! It shifts like butter. And has a nice positive snick. Like a rifle bolt going home.
install it. you will love it, too!!!
PS: I agree on the earlier comments on 5th gear... it maybe a result of the pattern and the longer shifter covered it up. It is not fatal, by any means. I am getting to the point I don't notice it anymore.
Hurst feels like stock. I love my ripper. It is notchy and precise. you have to feel both for yourself and judge them based on what you want not others opinions IMO.
I thought the Hurst install was very easy, but I had the tranny out at the time.
No reverse lock out on the Hurst, but I've heard around here you can modify it to have the lockout. So far I have not accidently gone over too far and found reverse. You have to really shove it over there to get into reverse. Yet I have the constant fear I am accidently gonna go into reverse. Does anybody know how to mod the Hurst so it has that reverse lockout??
It takes quite a bit of effort to install the Hurst if the transmission is in the car, especially if you leave the exhaust in place like I did. However, the end result is worth the effort.
