Default Knock Sensor ???

I broke the knock sensor on my ZZ4 block. It is loose in it's metal housing. Without it being mechnically linked to itself; will it cause anything to occur in engine operation?? Could it vibrating around causing timing to vary and cause engine knock??

Thanks for every answer.

........ Congratulations ... you have just desensitized your knock sensor ......... just kidding ! well , maybe not entirely ... first : any codes set ? ... If not , the ESC ( electronic spark control ) thinks its still OK ........ It may not register actual knocking in its present condition , but if your compression and chip are factory and you typically run the high octane grades of gas , your engine won't mind ........ replace it when you can ....

The opposite.

On startup, the ECM advances the spark to generate knock so it knows the KS is working.
If it finds it not working it will throw a code and prevent any spark advance over 1500 rpm to
" prevent" your engine from blowing up

If I was you I would get a new one as soon as possible..Just remember you have to torque them to a specific number to get them to work correctly, to loose and there not sensitive enough, to tight and there to sensitive... I didn't even drain the block to put mine in, Pete K told me to just switch them real quick and I would only lose a small amount of coolant, thats what I did and I only lost a few ounces. The sensors usually come with a dried orange sealant already on the threads, so there"s no need to add any more ....WW

Everyone I have pulled has had a plug of crud blocking the hole so no leak at all
Biggest problem is getting a old one out ,the pressed metal top with the hex always breaks away on older units leaving only the base that you have to access somehow ; usually with Vise grips or similar

Your not the only one

This is how I removed mine..

I had to lightly tap the "easy out" into place before putting a socket on it..

I guess I'm lucky because mine came right out after being in there for 28 years. No crud blocking the hole.

bus; my 84 was in need of a loft of tlc when i got it. changed parts and fixed systems as could get to them in order of safety and the running of engine.

the white center was broken. no codes. it did run O K. did drive for about 10 months before could change. i did notice an improvement in fuel milage and smother performance after fixing. mine did come out tight but in one piece.

on older fittings like this, try to loosen and if no movement then tighten a tiny bit. work back and forth like this and you would be surprised at how well this can work on stuck bolts. most people never think to to do this. kinda counter intuitive.
