Hello, i'm going to replace the oil pan on my 88 L98 with an LT1 oil pan. I can plug the oil level sensor hole with a $40 sensor or can I get a bolt from the hardware store? I saw a link to a canton plug for $10 but I want to get this before the weekend. If I get a bolt how can I make sure it doesn't leak? Teflon tape? permatex? special washers? An oil plug washer appears to be way too small.
why not just use a brass plug & teflon...found at HD or ACE or most any plumbing store.
Why? Because it "ain't" the right thing to use! What your hinting to use is generally available in NPT and I don't recall ACE or HD or a plumbing store stocking "metric taper pipe plugs" besides it's NOT a taper thread.
OP - I'm quite confident that the thread is M20X1.5 and you could use an M20X1.5 oil drain plug and gasket for a "correct" solution. The easiest to find is probably a Dorman brand 090-040 and will come with a gasket also. Since it's going to be a single time install the Permatex and the gasket might be reasonable or the TT.
So I found an economical solution. I went to the local auto parts store and picked up a generic M20 x 1.5 oil drain plug with gasket for $4.39. During lunch I went to the local hardware store and couldn't find a bolt, plug, or anything else for that matter that would fit. The dealership wanted to sell me a sensor for $40+ and didn't have any other suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestions

Imagine that! I would have guessed a little less expensive than that but maybe it's magnetic also! A "BONUS"!!!
Kinda like using a course thread nut on a fine thread bolt. It don't fit. Pipe thread is tapered and is designed to seal by getting tighter as it goes in. The sensor is a straight fitting, not tapered. The seal is with the gasket in this case.
